We all know the feeling - the holidays are over and you’re feeling bloated and unhealthy. It might have been that extra slice of pie at Thanksgiving or perhaps it was all the Christmas chocolate. Let’s slow down a minute. Before we dive into the different ways that you can detox your body, let’s take a look at what a detox actually is. 


People throw the word detox around in everyday conversation, and what they’re talking about tends to be following a special diet or using products that state they can rid your body of toxins. They often are also using this word in tandem with weight loss and healthy lifestyles. 


While this is how the word “detox” is typically used, a detox is actually any method that eliminates toxins from the body. These methods don’t have to be through chemicals - your body is actually fully equipped to eliminate those toxins itself. To boost that system, all you need to do is incorporate a few small changes into your lifestyle. 

Tip #1: Cut Out the Alcohol

Weekends are prime time for getting out and enjoying a happy hour with friends, but unfortunately, that glass of wine isn’t conducive to detoxifying your body. More than 90% of alcohol is metabolized in the liver, which converts the alcohol into acetaldehyde. 


What’s so bad about acetaldehyde, you ask? Well, unfortunately that chemical is known to cause cancer; a healthy liver is able to remove that toxin and flush it from the body. 


However, when you drink large quantities your liver function is damaged, which makes it harder for your liver to flush out waste and keep your body healthy. 

Tip#2: Get More Sleep

With the busy lives we lead in today’s society, getting enough sleep can be difficult. However, sleep is essential for keeping your body healthy and keeping the toxins at bay!


When you sleep you’re brain recharges and removes toxic waste byproducts that have accumulated in your system throughout the day. Toxins such as beta-amyloid build up in the brain and if they’re not removed and treated then they can ultimately lead to Alzheimer’s and other dangerous diseases. 


On top of that, lack of sleep reduces your body’s ability to function and makes it harder for your body to remove toxins and flush out waste. 

Tip #3: Stay Hydrated

Your body needs water for so many reasons; water lubricates joints, regulates your body temperature, helps you absorb nutrients, aids digestion, and flushes out waste products. 


When you drink water, the fluid transports waste out of your body and removes them from your system through breathing, sweating, or urination. 


To keep your body functioning at its finest, you should try to drink about a liter of water a day. Keep in mind that depending on where you live you may need more or less water throughout the day. 

Tip #4: Get Rid of Processed Foods

Processed foods are your body’s worst enemy, and sugary products aren’t far behind. Consuming these types of products has been linked to all kinds of diseases and health issues in the long run. 


What’s more, when your body begins to rely on processed or sugary foods, you bring a lot of unhealthy and unwanted chemicals into your body. And, ultimately those chemicals can hinder your body from detoxifying and cleansing itself.
